about
NOTE: Some sounds in this are harsh. I recommend listening without headphones for this release as it sways and dips in volume. I'm tired of trying to get this perfect and just want to throw it into the ether...
In the summer of 2021, I acquired my first SONY V . O . R (1 of 2) handheld tape recorder. At the time I did not have a computer to create music independently. (except for my phone where I would mess around with the free Garageband app) So I carried around this recorder in my tote bag every day and recorded every sound I found interesting or exciting. Test exports from GarageBand, people talking, hitting trash cans, broken bulbs, sounds that electronics create that the human ear can not hear without an electromagnetic microphone, Vacations with friends, 4th of July fireworks, etc, etc...
Along with the purchase of the recorder, I received 2 Maxell UR IEC TYPE I Cassette tapes. Over time, I noticed things I did not remember recording. Mainly a long-form conversation between a man and a woman where she is seemingly trying to help him understand how to work his computer.
He must have owned this machine or the tapes at some point and recorded all of their dialog for him to listen back to so he could perfect his computer wizardry skills.
I wonder where they are.
There are some small sections of them talking along with some text-to-speech synthesis from his computer in this recording. Smashed between other snippets I was recording that have now naturally come together to form whatever the hell this is.
Long story short this is about 5-10% of what is on the current tape collection I have collecting dust.
This will be one of many tape exports that are not very musical, Contain no Traditional song structure but capture a time in my life that was full of Fun, Trauma, Death, The Pandemic, Mourning, confusion, and Sunshine.
I am here today, Happy I can look back on my life in this format, and hopeful for the future.
These tapes serve as a reminder of times I don't want to forget.
